Mary's Story — Mary is a 68 year old widow whose husband committed suicide in the family garage one Saturday three years ago. She was placed on an antidepressant after the incident and after a year and a half came off the medication. The last several months have become harder for Mary with increased depression and a rise in both her blood pressure and cholesterol. The doctor recommended diet, exercise and medication. Mary asked if she could try our 40 day Walk to Jerusalem and if her results were not improved she would try medication. Mary picked up her pedometer and we talked about ways for her to gradually increase to a goal of 8,000 steps a day. Several women in the church encouraged Mary by walking with her on a regular basis, especially Saturdays; the “tough” day. 40 days after starting the program Mary told me her doctor was thrilled to see her blood pressure down, cholesterol down and her depression greatly improved and did not prescribe medication. Mary is thrilled and walking daily!
Gary's Story — Gary a 52 year old parent accompanied his daughter on the local high school's band trip to Italy during the 40 day journey. He wore his pedometer and the teens on the trip were checking in with him daily to find out how many miles they walked. They were surprised at their ending total of 73 miles. Gary, a quiet individual, was able to get to know his daughter's classmates and have fun positive interactions with them during their inquiries about the pedometer, why he was doing it, where he was going and the daily progress they made. He stated, “Without the pedometer none of this would have happened and the trip would not have been nearly as fun nor would I have gotten to know so many of the teens so quickly, and they remember me!”
Bill's Story — Bill a 63 year old male suffers from SADD and depression. He is also now raising his two grandchildren ages 8 & 5 adding a bit more stress to his life. Bill started the walking challenge of 10,000 steps a day by himself. After the first week whenever possible the grandchildren would tag along. Soon the three of them were logging in 10-15 miles with a day high of 23 miles. Bill would carry a backpack and pick up litter and the kids would seek treasures. One day they found a shiny new revolver, reported it to the police and wound up testifying in a court hearing. The children are now avid walkers and have found a beautiful array of treasures, including crystal candlesticks. The trio enjoyed getting to know each other and their neighbors while walking. They continue this habit of walking everyday sharing and talking about God's beautiful kingdom.
- Bill did not need medication to get him through these rough times, but found walking was the right elixir.
